Amparo, Berta Salinas

Years ago, Berta Salinas found a book with images of old tents, simple fabrics turned into architecture. From the scraps that took care of her home and from these fabrics mutated at home, Amparo was created as part of Vilaseco editions. Cotton, linen and silk shelters; weights, wefts, glosses and mattes. Berta joins the fabrics two by two, they dialogue with each other, they invoke the old worn-out scraps, the tents sheltered from a bonfire.

Six buttonholes embroidered by her tear each of her fabrics. The winds penetrate through the holes: long, narrow strips, like those that held the aprons to the waists of our grandmothers, now hold the fabrics against the void. Its tension, variable and subject to our strength and our desire, modifies a warm and flexible surface: it can be a blank canvas, but also a den.

Berta Salinas (Madrid, 1982) has BFA in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid and a degree in the Film School. Currently she combines her work in Art Direction with her artistic side.

Drawing from drawing, engraving and photography, her practice evolved into embroidery. Salinas has been researching weaving for years and telling us stories through her textile pieces. In her photographs there is a reflection on the connections between the people and objects that surround us; Many of her pieces come from these images. Berta creates an imaginary based on anatomy, nature and everyday objects, an exploration of her intimate sphere that, however, welcomes us all.

This piece has been exhibited in the group exhibition Múltiples, 2024.
