For Schomaker, the images depicted in her work are secondary to the themes she explores through the creative process. She focuses on the power of painting and the depiction of atmosphere. These themes are expressed in the artist’s unique visual language, characterized by a tension between figurative depiction and pictorial abstraction. Her palette is calm, with little divergence between tones of pastel, black, white and gray. This simplicity of her palette makes her work drawing-like, a quality further emphasized by the pencil marks and other traces left over from the work process.
