Lois Patiño studied psychology at the Complutense University of Madrid and film at Escuela TAI. He went on to study film in New York and Barcelona, where he completed a Master’s degree in creative documentary film-making at Pompeu Fabra University.

His videos and video installations have been shown at leading Spanish art centers such as MACBA and CCCB (Barcelona), Casa Encendida (Madrid) and MARCO (Vigo), and at art fairs such as ARCO and SWAB. He has shown at international spaces such at Centro Cultural San Martín (Buenos Aires), Konstnärshuset (Stockholm), Copperfield Gallery (London) and JIFF Art Gallery (South Korea), and at fairs such as Paris Photo (France), Photo London (UK) and Unseen (Netherlands).

His films have been shown at film festivals such as Locarno, Toronto, Rotterdam, San Francisco, Ann Arbour, Viennale, Rome, Cinéma du réel, as well as Les Rencontres Internationales held at Centre Pompidou (Paris), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin) and Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid).

His work has been spotlighted at such venues at New York Film Festival (Views from the Avant Garde), Flaherty Seminar (Colgate University), BAFICI (Argentina) or the Cali Film Festival (Colombia). He has been invited to show his work at universities such as Harvard (Sensory Ethnography Lab), CalArts (Los Angeles), California College of the Arts (San Francisco) or the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires (FUC). In 2016 he received Harvard University’s Robert Fulton III Fellowship, awarded to emerging filmmakers who embody Fulton’s “independent spirit; his exploration of diverse cultures […] and his profound aesthetic sensibility.”

Exhibitions

Estratos del instante / 2020

In his solo exhibition Estratos del instante (Strata of the instant), Lois Patiño uses videos and photographs to reflect on time and images, analyzing how images form during the duration of the gaze.

Flotabilidad neutra / 2019

In scuba diving, the term “neutral buoyancy” is the point of equilibrium at which a submerged object neither floats upward to the surface nor sinks downward, but remains suspended, in total sync with the movement of the surrounding mass of water.
